In a small town in America Lars falls into a delusional state, surprising friends and family when his new girlfriend Bianca is a life-size silicon sex doll; however encouraged by his doctor and their own affection for him the community rallies round, involving Bianca in the town’s social activities until Lars can be cured.
Nancy Oliver’s Oscar-nominated script sets a wry tone against physical comedy, the tale thoughtful, never approaching the bad taste that the film’s premise could imply.
‘If this film were any more Capraesque, they’d have had to call it It’s a Wonderful Lars’ (Kate Stables, ‘Sight & Sound’)
