Over the Festival period the foyer of the Victoria Hall will be transformed by work made over the last two months in workshops during the 2008 Community Event ONE CITY. AirSpace have also compiled a very special film event which focuses on the work of emerging film makers and artists. Responding to themes of space and belonging revealed by the ONE CITY project and building on the past successes of the AirVideo showcases at the AirSpace Gallery these artists will be presenting a unique and engrossing show reel of films and animations.
Katie Shipley’s film brings a contrast to the busy festival atmosphere by re introducing us to familiar spaces in the city with expressive interactions. The Victoria Hall sits empty while a small wind up figure walks absent minded across the floor and a roll of fabric animates neglected areas of the city centre.
Louise Dawson’s Urban Landscapes captures the visual vibrancy of the festival atmosphere, whilst simultaneously offering a peaceful and contemplative sanctuary away from the highly energised environment.
Rob Pointon’s animated film depicts the gradule construction of a painting from the initial white canvas through to the completed image…but he does not stop there… in a dramatic twist the artist repeatedly repaints the canvas creating an animated narrative, which speaks of movement, time and transition.
Julie Gould’s film brings a splash of colour to the proceedings, quite literally, depicting a multi-faceted and multi-coloured abstract image of rain upon a window, the message is one of happiness and fun, the reverse of the usual reaction to the sight rain drops.
Chris Wright presents us with a documentary film of a performance staged at an empty Victoria hall, the work explores the idea of the solo performer, the joy of a simple act and explores movement. Warning this film contains bubble wrap!
