Ray Johnson is one of the city's familiar faces. A passionate ambassador of Stoke on Trent, and a senior lecturer in film studies at the Staffordshire University, Ray has been at the forefront of compiling and generating documentation of the city both past and present for many years. An authority on film making across the genres, Ray has developed for the Axis Festival a series of talks and discussions on various topics on film and film makers. All these workshops are free and are followed by an associated film screening, again many of them free. see individual entries for details.

Sweeny Todd the Musical, from stage to screen - a discussion
Stage director John Cumberlidge discusses the difference in approach when tackling a well known piece like Sweeny Todd. When Hollywood turns its attentions to the classics how does this effect the approach of future stage adeptations. What are the audience's expectations and how does a director go about re-inventing the work for a live experience?
